Hurricane Tammy Strengthens to Category 1, Threatening Northern Leeward Islands
Hurricane Tammy has strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane, prompting fresh Hurricane Warnings for several of the northern Leeward Islands. The storm, with maximum sustained winds of around 75 mph, is located less than 150 miles east-southeast of Martinique and is expected to gradually strengthen as it approaches the Leeward Islands.
Hurricane Warnings are in effect for Guadeloupe, Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat, and St. Kitts and Nevis. Tammy is forecast to move near or over the Leeward Islands on Saturday, bringing heavy rainfall to the region. Some islands could see at least a foot of rainfall, with the potential for flash flooding and mudslides.
Tammy is expected to be pulled northward by a frontal boundary after passing the northern Caribbean islands, staying clear of the Lower 48. Additionally, the National Hurricane Center is monitoring an area in the southwestern Caribbean Sea, just north of Panama, for possible development.
The Atlantic hurricane season is running slightly above average, with 20 named storms, six hurricanes, and three major hurricanes so far this season.
