In an exciting development for Caribbean education and training, Sandals Corporate University and the University of the West Indies Global Campus have entered into a pioneering partnership. This collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed at Sandals Barbados, aims to revolutionize education with cutting-edge digital technologies.
This partnership signifies a blend of two revered entities dedicated to the educational and developmental advancement of the Caribbean. “This is a marriage of two organizations that I personally have a lot of respect and love for,” stated Dr. Luz Longsworth, Senior Corporate Director at Sandals Corporate University. She highlighted the focus on digital transformation and the integration of technologies like extended reality (XR), augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and artificial intelligence (AI) into their initiatives.
A key aspect of this collaboration is the development of immersive learning experiences utilizing extended reality technologies. The UWI Global Campus will lend its expertise in the design and implementation of these projects, including creating hospitality training content. Dr. Francis Severin, Principal of UWI Global Campus, emphasized the importance of this partnership in fostering the digital economy in the Caribbean, making education more inclusive, and breaking down barriers to participation.
Both parties envision the establishment of an immersive learning centre to facilitate efficient and effective learning and training in the knowledge metaverse. This initiative not only aims to leverage technology in education but also to create new opportunities for learners and organizations in the region.
The collaboration has already embarked on its inaugural project – the Digital Immersive Virtual Enhancement (DIVE) Project for undersea heritage, offering a virtual diving experience of the Caribbean Sea. This partnership between Sandals Corporate University and UWI Global Campus marks a significant step towards embracing technology in education and workforce development in the Caribbean.
