Chaos in Haiti

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the United Nations have voiced their concerns as Haiti faces an escalating crisis characterized by a mass prison breakout, intensifying gang violence, and mounting hunger. Despite continuous efforts to foster a domestically derived resolution to the crisis, consensus among Haitian government and stakeholders has proven challenging.

Guyana’s President Dr. Irfaan Ali, serving as the CARICOM Chairman, highlighted the difficulties in reaching an agreement between the Haitian government, opposition, private sector, civil society, and religious organizations. Despite these challenges, President Ali assured that CARICOM is dedicated to contributing its efforts to address the critical situation in Haiti.

In light of the deteriorating conditions, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, underscored the urgent need for the deployment of a Council-mandated multinational security support mission in Haiti. Emphasizing the dire situation, Türk stated, “We are simply running out of time,” acknowledging the lethal threat posed by the recent mass prison escape to Haiti’s national security.

Over 4,500 inmates have escaped, including key gang members and individuals connected to the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. This event marked a significant effort by gangs to destabilize national institutions and challenge the government led by Prime Minister Ariel Henry.

Amidst this chaos, Haitian politicians have begun forming alliances with the aim of steering the country through its turmoil. The international community, including the United States, has called for a political process that would lead to the establishment of a presidential transitional council and eventually, elections. This collaborative approach underscores the global commitment to restoring stability and democracy in Haiti.
