Sweden has successfully joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), becoming its 32nd member after completing the accession process in Washington. The ceremony, marking a significant milestone, occurred two years after Sweden sought NATO membership following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson emphasized “unity and solidarity” as Sweden’s core principles in joining NATO.

US President Joe Biden highlighted that NATO stands “more united, determined, and dynamic,” especially with Sweden’s addition, reinforcing the alliance’s commitment to freedom and democracy. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg expressed strong support for Sweden’s membership, noting the strengthened security and capabilities it brings to the alliance.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky also welcomed Sweden to NATO, pointing to increased protection from Russian aggression for Europe. However, Russia has issued warnings, promising to take political and military measures in response to Sweden’s accession.

Sweden’s journey to NATO membership faced hurdles, including opposition from Turkey, which demanded action against Kurdish separatists, and Hungary, which accused Sweden of hostility. Both countries eventually ratified Sweden’s bid, underscoring the alliance’s expanded commitment to mutual defense and security amid growing geopolitical tensions.
